Amir Khan, will make the second defence of his WBA Light-welterweight title , when as anticipated he will go up against New York’s Paulie Malignaggi on 15th May, at The WaMu Theatre in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Bolton’s Khan won the title defeating Andrea Kotelnik in July last year and is coming off a first-round knockout of another New York fighter Dmitriy Salita.

The former Olympic silver medalist’s has rebuilt his career since being stopped in the first round by Breidis Prescott in September 2008, and after the win against Salita he left promoter Frank Warren to join Oscar Da La Hoya’s promotional banner, Golden Boy and is now based in LA, with top trainer Freddy Roach.

Malignaggi is coming off of December’s unanimous decision over Juan Diaz, which was a rematch of his disputed loss in August.

“Both sides have agreed to fight at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden, so that’s all done. We’re working on the press tour for that as well,” said Richard Schaefer, president of Golden Boy Promotions.
“It’s great for Paulie to be fighting in his home town, you know, and I know that that’s going to be an extra motivation for him. And what a great way, I think, for Amir Khan to make his U.S. debut from New York against somebody like Malignaggi,” said Schaefer.
“When Amir signed with us, he made it clear that he wants to be in big fights and he sort of gave us his target list,” said Schaefer. “We’re just trying to deliver to him the big fights that he wants, with Malignaggi being the first one.”

“I’m sure, is confident in Malignaggi’s ability to perform, and we’re confident that Amir Khan will deliver,” said Schaefer. “So there’s no options, no rematch, no nothing. It’s just going to be winner takes it all.” said, Malignaggi’s promoter Lou DiBella.
An announcement is expected in the coming week, with Oscar De La Hoya likely to fly to the UK to host a press conference with Khan, having confirmed that they will be fighting.
