Thomas McDonagh will hope to become more than a ‘nearly man’ when he takes on Gary Woolcombe for the vacant Commonwealth light middleweight title at Wigan’s Robin Park Arena on April 16th.
The 29-year-old McDonagh has narrowly missed out in challenges for the English, Commonwealth, British and WBU light middleweight titles but will hope to reverse the trend when he faces Woolcombe.
“Tommy has been around the boxing world a long time now and has been very unlucky with his defeats,” said promoter Ricky Hatton.
In his last fight ‘Storm Boy’ was narrowly outpointed by Anthony Small for the British and Commonwealth titles. 18 months earlier, McDonagh had to settle for a 96-96 draw when he challenged Andrew Facey for the English title and lost a split decision when challenging for the WBU light middleweight title against Wayne Alexander in 2006.
“His fight with Anthony Small was one many thought he had won and he came agonisingly close against Facey,” continued Hatton. “He was also unlucky when he lost by a single point to Sam Webb, who is now British champion, and this opportunity for the Commonwealth title may prove to be his last chance.”
“I know Tommy has been training harder than ever though and will be determined to not let this opportunity slip away. He has been going on punishing runs over Holcombe Hill with stable mate Scott Quigg, and we at Hatton Promotions are confident that Tommy’s time will come on April 16th,” concluded Hatton.
