Former WBU Featherweight Champion Derry Mathews returned to ring on Saturday night to score an easy points win over opponent Kristian Laight.
Sporting the word “Dirty” emblazoned on his new trunks and now fighting at Lightweight, Derry won every round on Howard Foster’s scorecard to improve his record to 22-4-0 at Fit City Gym in Salford, Manchester.
It was a timely return for Mathews, who retired last November after a bad run of defeats, but has now returned with a renewed vigor for the game.
Derry admitted to being nervous before the fight and compared it to fighting for the WBU belt held not too long ago.
“I’m over the moon that is out of the way. That was like a world title fight for me. I’m just so happy.” Said Mathews afterwards.
Derry will now be looking to stay busy in the run up to Christmas and has penned in a date eight weeks from now for the next step of his comeback.
British Boxers wish him all the best.
