Although it was predicted that Nathan Cleverly could out-box and beat Karo Murat, it was the manner in which he went about his work, that was not foreseen by many who observed the fight in Birmingham, on the “Magnificent Seven” bill, Saturday night.
.
The Welshman, took his record to 22-0, 10KO’s by dismantling and then halting Murat, in a thrilling battle of destructive intent, stopping the previously unbeaten rock solid German at the end of the 9th round in their WBO world light-heavyweight final eliminator.
.
Cleverly, was expected to use his Superior skills to jab and out-box the flat footed Murat, but instead stood in his face trading and pounding the iron chin of the former European super middleweight champion, sometimes at will – before referee Mark Nelson had decided that the bloodied German had taken quite enough.
.
The Mathematician from the Gwent valleys is as sharp as a tack and knows more angles than Archimedes! Bamboozling Murat and showing contempt for his power. Taking the Germans dangerous right hands and left hooks, Cleverly always came back stronger, with more hurtful punches of his own, winning every round on the judges’ scorecards and breaking the will of the tough German.
.
“Murat is used to people jabbing and moving, but I decided to stand in the ring and trade, to knock the fight out of him,” said Math’s student Cleverly.
.
“I’ve gone up a level since finishing my degree and I felt I gave the fans an exciting performance.
.
“It went 100% to plan. My plan was to get out there and be impressive from the start. I had a great start and I took the fight right out of him.” Cleverly added.
.
.
Cleverly’s reward for his emphatic victory is likely to be a world title challenge in December against the reigning WBO champion, German southpaw Jurgen Brahmer, who has an impressive record of 29 knockouts in 38 fights and just 2 losses both on points.
.
Frank Warren will be hosting another bumper card on December 11th at the ExCeL Arena in London to celebrate his 30th year as a boxing promoter and will hope to secure the 23-year-old Cleverly, a world title shot against Brahmer.
.
Mandatory challenger Cleverly, will get his deserved shot at the WBO title even if it for the vacant title. Current Champion Brahmer is currently appealing against a 16-month prison sentence for assault and if found guilty and jailed, will be stripped of the belt, leaving Cleverly a chance to try it for size, either being handed the title outright in Brahmer’s absence, or getting a shot at the vacated crown, challenger TBC.
