Boxers from the close knit fighting community will come together tonight, as they always do when one of their own need a helping hand.
.
The fund raising night at Doncaster Nights RUFC, is in aid of former ring warrior Jason Rushton from Doncaster. His Dad john and the family are trying to raise money so that Jason can have an eye operation to try and save his sight.
.
Memorabilia will be auctioned off at the benefit night and guests will dine at £60 a head for a 3 course meal, which will hopefully raise the money needed towards the vital eye treatment Jason desperately requires.
.
Amongst many other names from the sport attending and getting involved for Jason’s cause are, boxing writer Steve Bunce who will be hosting the event, and numerous fighters including Kell Brook, Johnny Nelson, Gary Sykes, Jamie Moore, Ryan Rhodes, Junior Witter, Matthew Macklin, John Murray, Craig Watson, Scott Quigg, Jamie McDonnell, Martin Murray and Jonjo Irwin. Promoters Frank Warren and Frank Maloney have also bought tables for the event.
.
Boxing legend Roy Jones junior has donated an auction item on his recent trip to Britain after hearing of Jason’s plight from local entrepreneur Andy Booker.
.
Jason Rushton 27, the former Central Area champion suffered life threatening brain injuries in a title fight against Blackpool’s light middleweight Brian Rose a year ago this week in a bout that finished his boxing career and nearly ended his life.
.
The fight was for Central Area title, and after a good effort in the fight by Jason he was stopped by Rose in the last seconds of the ten round bout.
.
Jason had wanted to continue but the referee called the fight off and although disappointed Jason had looked ok on leaving the ring, but later collapsed on the way to the dressing room after the fight.
He was rushed to Hope hospital in Salford and placed in a drug induced coma for 18 hours to relieve bleeding and bruising to his brain.
.
Jason later underwent a long period of rehabilitation at the Magnolia Lodge wing at Tickhill Road Hospital in Doncaster, undergoing treatment for post traumatic amnesia and therapy to improve his speech.
.
The injury has also affected his vision – which has caused lasting damage and resulting in Jason being totally blind in his right eye and only about ten to twenty per cent vision remaining in his left.
.
The condition has currently stabilised but there is a course of treatment available in America at a cost of £55,000 that could prevent it getting worse.
.
Tomorrow night’s benefit dinner at the Doncaster Knights Armthorpe Road ground is the first of a series of events planned to try and raise the money to pay for the treatment.
.
Jason said: “It’s good of people to rally round but I wish it wasn’t necessary.
.
“I’d much rather be penniless and as fit as I used to be. I can cope with most things but I’m terrified of losing my sight.”
.
We wish Jason and his family as always our support and best wishes for tonight’s event and his continued rehabilitation and health.
.
Anyone wishing to attend tonight’s dinner or lend there support to Jason’s fundraising events or otherwise, please contact Jason’s Dad John Rushton on 07919 275 753.
