Danny McIntosh – European Champion

European light heavyweight champion Danny McIntosh defends his European light-heavyweight title  against Eduard Gutknecht in Neubrandenburg, Germany on Saturday night May 7th.

McIntosh shown in his last fight that he doesn’t mind fighting in the other fellows back yard, when he won the vacant title with a dramatic 11th round KO of Thierry Karl in Levallois-Perret, France in January.

McIntosh,(13-1, 7 KO’s) the English light heavyweight champion entered the defining round way behind on points and heading for defeat, until he produced an overhand right that caught Karl flush, stunning him.

With the Frenchman hurt, McIntosh stormed in with a combination of punches to drop Karl to the canvas, referee Guido Cavalleri stepped in and waved things off with 38 seconds remaining in the round.

‘The Big Mac’ was up against it in France and in the early rounds his inexperience shown, but the grit and effort he displayed to stay in the fight and never doubt himself paid dividends in the end.

In his last fight, McIntosh re-established himself and finally lived upto his earlier career promise and proved he was well over his only defeat against Nathan Cleverly in July 2009, and the gamble he took going abroad to take on the experienced former three weight French champion, who had only ever been stopped once in 32 fights, was a gamble that paid off and the Norwich boxer will be hoping of another away performance to hang onto the title.

Challenger Gutknecht (20-1, 8 KOs) will be a tough first defence for McIntosh, especially with home advantage. The German’s only loss was a close points defeat against countryman Robert Stieglitz for the WBO super middleweight world title in April last year and the Kazakhstan born, 29 year old says he will take the title off McIntosh.

“I´m thrilled to be fighting for the European title in just my second fight for Team Sauerland.

“McIntosh is a strong fighter with a big heart, he won his title on the road, which shows that he can perform well under pressure. But I will defeat him and take the title.” added  Gutknech.
