|Iain Weaver – British Boxer of the Week|
Iain Weaver returned from the Manguer Memorial Tournament in Kherson, Ukraine with a silver medal and the Best International Boxer of the Tournament trophy, after a week of stiff opposition from top European boxing nations.
Ninety six boxers from seventeen countries took part in the competition, including strong boxing nations such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Turkey and Russia.
In the close 60kg final the Southampton boxer lost to local boxer Dmitri Bulenkov by a single point, having received a caution in the final round.
The GB boxer’s disappointment followed a well executed start, in which he used a mixture of accurate straight shots and right hooks to take control and extend the first round score of 4:4 by three points.
During the final round Iain was put under increasing pressure from the local favourite, causing him to foul and receive a caution. This handed Bulenkov a two point advantage close to the end of the bout, and there wasn’t enough time for Iain to claw back his deficit.
Despite losing 18:19, Weaver was awarded the Best International Boxer of the Tournament trophy in recognition of his impressive performance.
