Nathan Cleverly has been dealt a massive blow today when WBO light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer pulled out of his defence against the Welshman after suffering a cut in training, that apparently re-opened on Tuesday.

The fight was top of the bill on Saturday nights O2 Arena show in ‘This is it’ promoted by Frank Warren. Braehmer will not be traveling to London today as scheduled.

It is a massive blow for Cleverly who is said to be in tremendous shape for this his big chance of world glory. It is not yet known if Cleverly will still fight on the bill, but it’s possible a replacement can be found and his months of preparation will not be in vain.

“I am absolutely devastated, this was the fight I really wanted, I’ve been gunning for him for over a year now,” Cleverly told Sky Sports.

“He is the champion, it is very unprofessional, he has ducked out of the fight as far as I’m concerned, the proof is now there that he doesn’t want to fight me.

“Maybe I’ll be elevated to the world champion and as far as I’m concerned I’m still going to be fighting on Saturday and my celebrations will start after that fight.

“I wanted this fight bad and he has let everyone down. I knew he didn’t want the fight, I had a feeling he would not turn up. This is a major disappointment. He is an awesome fighter, he is getting paid well, why not come over and take the fight?”

Cleverly 24, will now be awarded the title that is to be stripped from Braehmer and he will still fight in the main event against an oponent which is likly to be named in the coming hours.

A possible name being touted about is Liverpool’s commonwealth champion Tony Bellew, who is training for his rematch with Ovill McKenzie on July 16, but would surely would jump at the chance of a world title shot against Cleverly if offered.

“Whoever, I am ready, this is my dream oppertunity Saturday night and if anyone thinks they can step in at late notice and take away my dream then bring it on and we’l see, but I promise you i’l make sure I’ll destroy anyone in there Saturday night whoever it is.” Cleverly snarled
