Karl Place
Manchester light-welterweight prospect Karl Place knows that his British title eliminator fight against Steve Williams on Saturday night will be the toughest of his career so far.

But a confident Place says he has trained like never before and will match Williams in every department.

Place 23, is unbeaten in 15 fights, with 8 ending early and Williams is a step up in class for him.

But the man known as ‘Bulb Head’ by his mates and fans and as ‘The Manchester Mexican’ in boxing circles, he tells us he is in the best shape of his career to date and he is now ready to show everyone, what the boxing experts have been saying for a while and live upto the plaudits, that have been focused his way. Place says he not underestimated his Wallasey opponent and knows that Williams himself sees this fight as a ‘must win senario’ and will lay it all on the line.

The Robin Park Arena in Wigan will no doubt be in for a cracking fight here and on paper it is a genuine 50/50 affair, which will showcase one way or another the next challenger for the Lonsdale belt currently held by Ashley Theophane.

He is going to get the best Karl Place and the best Karl Place, will beat the best Steve Williams’. – Karl Place.

We caught up with camp Place on the eve of the fight to get his and his trainer, Steve Maylett’s final thoughts before they enter the most important fight in their young careers.

“These are the kind of fight’s that I have wanted and what Im in boxing for, its these type of fights that I need now.” Place told BritishBoxers.

“Ive trained as hard as I can for this, whatever Steve (trainer) as put in front of me I have done it, ive been beating all my previuos performances and times in training and im the fittest ive ever been.

“Im hungry for this fight, I know its gonna to be a tough and he (Williams) is coming to win, but that is what will bring the best out in me.

“When Ive boxed journey men, I know im going to beat them and it takes the edge off my performance, but when ive boxed fighters with winning records and who have come to fight me, I have took care of them, thats what I want and got that here in Williams and I’m going to takecare of business.

“He is going to get the best Karl Place and the best Karl Place, will beat the best Steve Williams. Im going to  be too good for him on the night. He might ask me some questions, but Ill answer em all. We know he is fit, he is strong and he punches quite hard, Im not underestimating him.

Place’s coach Stephen Maylett, at 28 is the youngest professional coach in the country and he too says he has never worked harder or been more focused in a training camp and as left no stone unturned in preperation for Steve Williams.

“Karl has been far more focused on this fight than any other, he has listened and took everything on board what we have worked at in preperation for Williams. he told us.

“We have a good six week camp and everyone of them weeks that have passed, he as been performing better and better in every aspect and will be ready to put all that into action on the night.

“We’ve had enough time to prepare for this fight, most of Karls previuos fights have been last minute opponents, but in this one, Karl knows what he has to do and what we have worked on he will exicute on Saturday.

“Williams is a fit lad and strong, so I have worked to get Karl fitter and stronger. I know Karl has already got the technical ability to beat Williams, but I believe he is also fitter and stronger than him aswell. He has ever been in better condition mentally or physically, he will be better in every department.

“I feel Karl is now ready to step up to the next level, which is domestic title level and a victory over Williams, who is a tough opponent! – Will prove that Karl is ready for a British title shot.

“I couldnt be more happy with what Ive done and what Karl as done, we have cut no corners and done everything to get him in the best shape possible, losing is not an option for Karl!
