Gary Buckland defends his British title against Paul Truscott tonight

It took Paul Truscott two attempts to make the weight for his British super-featherweight title challenge against Gary Buckland, which takes place at Ponds Forge Arena in Sheffield tonight (March 24).

At the second time of asking on Friday afternoon, Middlesbrough’s Truscott eventually made the required weight, scaling 9st 4lbs, bang on the super-featherweight limit, Buckland the champion came in at 9st 3lbs.

Buckland, 25, was involved in one of the fights of the year when he won the Lonsdale belt against Gary Sykes last September. And there is nothing to suggest that this fight will not match or exceed that one.

Truscott is the former Commonwealth featherweight champion and a good fighter, with a good chance of causing the Buckland bandwagon to go off the tracks. But the Cardiff champion has big plans ahead and has set his sights on stepping up to European level.

Buckland from Newport has already fought for a European belt in May 2010, losing to John Murray in an 11th round knockout for the lightweight title,
before moving down to his natural super-featherweight division where he has since flourished.

Buckland, has lost just two of his 26 fights since turning professional
in 2005, and since the loss to Murray, he is unbeaten, Truscott has
been beaten twice in 20 bouts. 

“I don’t want to look past Truscott, but I want Fegatilli after this.” said Buckland.
“Truscott who is a good tidy boxer, but gets drawn in.
“Hopefully I can draw him into a fight and he’ll play into my hands.” he added.
Stephen Foster is the mandatory challenger for the winner of Buckland and Truscott.
