Denton Vassell won
the Commonwealth title courtesy of a bruising decision win over Lee Purdy in
April 2010.  Vassell’s triumph over Purdy
was bittersweet for the Ricky Hatton-promoted boxer as his father, Mancel, was
ill in hospital at the time and later passed away after battling cancer ahead
of Denton’s maiden defence, a decision win over the experienced Bethuel Ushona
in March 2011.  Denton, nicknamed
‘Achilles’ due to his impressive physique, battled through his grief, overcame
Ushona’s’s negative tactics and dedicated the fight to his father.

Ironically, Mancel had
disapproved of Denton’s decision to become a boxer when the youngster turned
his back on bodybuilding at the age of 15.  However, Mancel supported
Denton’s choice after witnessing his son’s determination to succeed.

Denton’s last fight
was a decision win over Samuel Colomban in November 2011.  He was supposed to fight in April, but his
son fell ill with bronchial problems and was hospitalised, prompting Denton to
push his first outing of 2012 back rather than short-change himself, his family
and his fans.  With his son now on the
mend, Vassell hopes to put the hardships of recent years behind him and move on
with his boxing career.
