Amir Khan confirmed on his Twitter page this morning that he will fight WBC light-welterweight champion Danny Garcia at the Mandalay Bay resort.in Las Vegas on July 14.
Khan, 25, had been scheduled to meet Lamont Peterson last weekend in a rematch, after losing his world titles in controversial circumstances last December. But the fight was called off after the American tested positive for a banned steroid. – Khan’s team had drawn up a shortlist of possible opponents before opting to take on the other divisions belt holder, unbeaten in 23 fights, ‘Swift’ Garcia…
Garcia is a tasty boxer (see video below) and is being tipped as a future pound for pound ranked fighter. He won the WBC belt with a unanimous decision over Mexican Erik Morales in March.
The fight ill be for Garcia’s belt, but it still unclear if Peterson will be stripped of his belts and then they too will be on the line in a unified clash. Although it is currently unclear what belts, if any, will be on the line when he takes on Khan at the Mandalay Bay resort.
Peterson’s positive drug test led to Khan’s promoter, Golden Boy, attempting to have the outcome of the controversial fight reversed and the WBA and IBF titles returned to the Bolton boxer.
Garcia tweeted on May 19: “If he (Khan) doesn’t get his belts back, we can’t fight. A unification bout is the only fight that can not let me fight my mandatory.”
The 24-year-old is due for a mandatory defence of his title against Ajose Olusegun but, should Khan be given back either one or both of his titles, the WBC would sanction Garcia-Khan because a unification bout would take precedence over a mandatory fights.
However, Khan tweeted this morning : “Just want to say thank you for all the support and may the best man win on July 14th. Khan Vs Garcia. Mandalay Bay Vegas.”

So it seems it will be imminent before Peterson is stripped of the titles. What a sad story the Lamont Peterson one turned into, from a great rags to riches, bottom to the top struggle, his legacy has now been tainted forever. just a thought!!
