21st July 2012
On September 22nd Scotland’s Ricky Burns will take on Kevin Mitchell in defence of his WBO lightweight world title, it’s been a fight that’s been talked about by fans and the British boxing world for some time now. This will be a testing time for Burns, who won the interim title in November 2011 against Michael Katsidis and as for Mitchell this will be the second WBO World title challenge at lightweight, after he was previously beaten by Katsidis in 2010 after a third round TKO.
Mitchell is one of the finest boxers in Britain and the question is whether he has the ability to beat Burns, there have been a few issues outside the ring with Mitchell which have made his career a little off balance especially with his loss against Katsidis. With the correct training and determination he may even overcome the critics and land himself the world title.
At the beginning of July they met face to face at RAF Hendon near London and announced their showdown, Burns said, “The countdown is on and the fight trade has been talking about us two meeting and it’s happening at the perfect time, Mitchell is a great fighter and for me it’s testing myself against the best.”
Mitchell also made admiring remarks about his opponent and said, “ Ricky’s a great person, a lovely guy and I consider him a mate of mine, business is business though , I’m not going there so it’s a must win fight for me, losing to Ricky is not an option.”
Even though they both have put their friendship aside for the time being Frank Warren says, “Two best lightweights, it’s a super fight Ricky is one of the best in the country and Kevin can be one of the best, and BoxNation is going extremely well and we’ve got some good events coming up over the next few months .”
