Cope beats Reid, Casey outpoints Booth in Sunderland Rumble

They both promised their fight would be the best of the afternoon and so it proved, as Hartlepool’s Peter Cope (8st 10lbs) and Redcar’s Gavin Reid (8st 9lbs) went to war on the ‘Summer Rumble 2’ show at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on July 15. 

From the opening bell, and for the full 10 rounds, the pair slugged
away at each other with neither man prepared to give an inch, as they
battled to take away the International Masters super-bantamweight title.
Their styles meshed perfectly. Reid (pictured) constantly came
forward, trying to get his head on Cope’s chest, all the while banging
away at his opponent’s long body. In contrast, ‘Copey’, backed by his
‘Barmy Army’, threw straight shots that pierced Gavin’s high guard and
continuously knocked his head back.
Reid’s nose leaked from the opening session onwards and, in the
fourth, after a sustained Cope attack pinned him on the ropes, it looked
as though he may get stopped. Gavin though is as tough as they come and
he battled through, even beckoning Peter on as the round closed.

All the quality came from Cope who banged in lefts and rights to the
head, before finishing off his combinations down to the body. In just
his sixth fight, the 21 year old showed real mettle as he met Reid’s
attacks head-on.


Cut over the right eye in the seventh, and down for a
count in the ninth, Cope sucked it up and got through to the final
bell, securing a 98-92 verdict from referee Andrew Wright. Reid is now 6-15-1 (3); Cope is 6-0.
In the headliner, Ireland’s Willie Casey outpointed Jason Booth
over 12 rounds to pick up the WBA European super-bantamweight crown.
This was another fight that showcased an opposing contrast in styles
with ‘Big Bang’ Casey swarming forward trying to cut Booth down, while
the Nottingham man bobbed and weaved, and relied on his boxing skills.

The pattern of the fight never changed from the opening to last bell,
as Willie pressured Booth and worked away at his body, often trapping
his man against the ropes. Jason, cut in the tenth, countered well,
seemed to have the better accuracy and landed a greater variety of
shots.

Most of the rounds were close and hard to score but, ultimately, the
judges favoured Willie’s work rate. Dave Parris scored 116-112, Mark
Curry 115-114, and Andrew Wright had it 115-114. I had Booth just
nicking it.

Casey is now 14-2 (9); Booth 36-10 (15). Referee was Michael Alexander.
