British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion George Groves stopped Francisco Sierra in the sixth round after an exciting battle that saw the Londoner eventually dig in to overcome the tough heavy handed Mexican at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
Groves, 24, fighting for the second time in America, was caught by several big shots in the opening couple of rounds and a clash of heads in the third caused an awful cut on his right eye. Groves continued to scrap up close with Sierra despite the cut, and was given more problems when he caught by a hurtful body shot at the end of the 5th round.
The Hammersmith man recovered though and started the sixth round strong, planting his feet he caught his foe with a back hand right and doubled up the left hook with great timing and power to drop Sierra. He unsteadily got to his feet and when the referee waved them on Groves ceased his chance and threw a combination of shots and another telling right hand forced Sierra’s corner to throw in the towel, just as the ref was stepping in to stop it.
