GB Boxing secured three more medals on the second Monday of the 2012 Olympic Games as wins for Anthony Ogogo, Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams ensured they will come away with at least a guaranteed bronze.
It takes the team’s current tally to four after Luke Campbell guaranteed Team GB’s first boxing medal in Sunday’s bantamweight quarter final.
For Adams, it was a history making achievement as she became the first ever women from Great Britain to win an Olympic boxing medal by defeating Stoyka Petrova of Bulgaria 16-7. The flyweight from Leeds was never troubled and won every round as she exhibited her full range of skills to a packed 10,000 crowd in the afternoon session at the ExCel Arena in London.
She was followed in the evening session by middleweight, Anthony Ogogo, who delighted a packed crowd with a 15-10 victory over Stefan Hartel of Germany to book his place in Friday’s semi-final.
Super heavyweight, Anthony Joshua, joined him in the last bout of the night with a 15-11 win over the silver medal winner from Beijing 2008, Zhang Zhilei of China to send the crowd home in a buoyant mood.
Earlier in the day, Natasha Jonas put in a brave performance as she lost out to four-time world champion, Katie Taylor, in the women’s lightweight category.
In a superb advert for women’s boxing, which raised the decibel level in the Excel Arena to new heights, Natasha more than held her own and was unfortunate to be trailing 10-7 after the first two rounds as she matched the favourite for gold with a series of fine left hooks and straight jabs.
But Taylor’s greater experience eventually paid off and she ran-out a 26-15 winner as Natasha was forced to try and chase the result in the final two rounds.
The afternoon also saw a surprise defeat for Savannah Marshall at the hands of Kazhakstan’s Marina Volnova. Despite not being at her best, much of Savannah’s good work in the early rounds seemed to go unrewarded and, despite a final round onslaught, she was unable to overturn a two-point deficit, losing 16-12.
Next up for GB Boxing, are the Welsh pair, Andrew Selby and Fred Evans who will box for a medal in Tuesday’s evening session which starts at 8.30pm.
