Three GB Boxers will go for gold on the final weekend of the 2012 Olympic Games after wins today for Luke Campbell, Fred Evans and Anthony Joshua in a fantastic day of boxing by the men after Nicola Adams’ gold medal heroics yesterday.
The boxing team has already delivered Great Britain’s best performance at the Olympics since 1956. Winning one more gold, to add to that won by Nicola in the women’s competition, will match the achievement of 1956. Two more will surpass it and represent Great Britain’s best performance since 1908.
The day began with a fine performance from Hull bantamweight who overcame Satoshi Shimizu of Japan 20-11 with a trademark composed performance. Against a game and awkward opponent, Luke quickly found his range to build-up an early lead and then matched the Japanese boxer for work-rate, winning the last round 9-5, as Shimizu mounted a final onslaught. Luke will box John Joe Nevin of Ireland in Saturday night’s final.
He will be joined in the finals by Fred Evans from Wales after he defeated the Ukranian world champion, Taras Shelestyuk in the evening session. A superb opening round saw Evans take a 4-1 lead with a series of incisive jabs and sharp combinations. An even second round saw Fred take a three point lead into the final round which he held onto despite a big effort from the Ukranian. Evans will box Serik Sapayev from Kazhakstan in Sunday’s final.
Joining Evans in Sunday’s closing session of boxing will be super heavyweight Anthony Joshua after a nail-biting 13-11 victory over the giant Khazak Ivan Dychko. A cagey opening saw the boxers even after two rounds as Joshua used his speed to counter Dychko’s height and reach advantage.
Spurred on by a vociferous home crowd,Joshua upped his attacks in the final round and pierced Dychko’s defences on a number of occasions to open up a two point advantage that saw him home.
In a repeat of last year’s world championship quarter final, Joshua will box the defending Olympic champion,Roberto Cammarelle of Italy in the last bout of the tournament on Sunday afternoon for the gold medal.
The day also saw Anthony Ogogo and bow out of the tournament with a bronze medal. The middleweight, who delivered one of the most memorable bouts of the tournament in his second round victory over world champion Ievgen Khytrov, eventually ran out of heroics as he lost out to Brazil’s powerful middleweight 16-9.
The man from Lowestoft, once again showed he has the heart to match his fitness and skills but in his fourth tough bout of an extremely demanding tournament he just did not have enough to overcome the Brazilian. He leaves with a thoroughly well deserved bronze medal to add to his Commonwealth Games silver from Delhi 2010.
