Retired former undisputed world super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has been called out to take on current undisputed super middleweight king Andre Ward in a mega comeback fight by the American’s Manager James Prince and his trainer Virgil Hunter.

Team Ward have dared Calzaghe, who quite the ring in 2008 with a record of 46-0, with 32KOs, to come out of retirement and face the WBC/WBA champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14KOs) according to Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com
Calzaghe, 40-years-old, has not fought since November 2008 when he outpointed another ring legend in Roy Jones Jr. Ward dominated the World Super Six tournament and returned to action again on Saturday night with an impressive victory, a 10th round stoppage over current light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson.
Prince told BoxingScene.com – “If there was one fight that I could make for Andre, it would be against Calzaghe. I would love to make that fight.”
Prince and Hunter were offended by some of Calzaghe comments that followed Ward’s victory over Carl Froch. Calzaghe had said in an interview with Ciaran Gibbons that he would have been too fast and too strong for Ward.
“I think the way Ward fights would have suited me to be honest. I would have had too much speed and power for him. So, yes, I would have beaten him,” Calzaghe said.
Hunter wants Calzaghe to back his words up. And they do not rule out the possibility of Ward traveling over here to face Calzaghe in a large UK stadium.
“A couple of months back, Joe Calzaghe made the comment that he would have beaten Andre Ward after Andre defeated Carl Froch in the Super Six. We’ve given Joe the proper respect and acknowledged his legacy for his accomplishments, but if you are going to be minimizing Andre on where he is as a fighter – to make that comment when you are in retirement and sitting somewhere safely in England – if you are going to make that comment, then as a fighter you should come out of retirement and back that comment up,” Hunter told BoxingScene.com
The chances of Calzaghe at 40, coming out of retirement to face Ward are slim. Or would he be tempted to consider a fight with the best around now? If he were to comeback for any fight, then this would be the one that would light the fire inside and be enough to get back in the gym with the juices flowing for battle again. Carl Froch has often called out Calzaghe, but the Welshman has never taken the bait. Froch was defeated by Ward last year.
Maybe Calzaghe might just gamble that unbeaten record if the reward was great? With Ricky Hatton set to announce a comeback it could be like old times again.
