Shaun Cummins
It is with sadness we bring you the news that former light-middleweight boxer Shaun Cummins has been found murdered at his home in Saffron Lane, Leicester.
Police searched his bungalow and found Shaun after neighbors raised the alarm last Wednesday. The details are too sad to write here and the shock of his death is enough for his family, friends and the boxing community to take in has it is.
Shaun, who was known as ‘The Guvnor’ retired from boxing in 1995 with a record of 22 wins, six defeats and a draw, he won the WBA Inter-Continental light middleweight title against Steve Foster in a great fight, before going on to defend the belt against Mickey Hughes. He went onto challenge for the European title against Italian Agostino Cardamone the following year, but was stopped on cuts.
After two comeback wins he challenged for the British title against Neville Brown, but was stopped in round 5. After boxing he went on to become a body builder and debt collector and was a bodyguard for a band. – But after a motorbike accident in 2004 left him paralysed with no feeling in the bottom half of his body.

In recent years Shaun had found it hard to deal with his disability but kept himself busy and occupied, he was devoted to his son and got about with the use of a wheel chair. He spoke about getting feeling back in his toes and never gave up hope.

He was active on the Internet setting up various websites including the British Boxing Greats forum and was positive recently about getting involved in a new venture at a local gym, where he was to become a coach. He was last seen alive on September 1.

A 28 year-old local man who is said to have been connected to Shaun, appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Saturday charged with his murder. He was remanded in custody and was due to appear before magistrates again this week.

A tragic story and a tragic ending.

RIP Shaun ‘The Guvnor’ Cummins
