Mark Thompson tells Jamie Moore he’s ready to take Jack Culcay’s title

Mark Thompson crosses the channel this week to challenge the undefeated Ecuador-born, German based prospect Jack Culcay for his WBA Inter-Continental light-middleweight title, on the undercard of the Alexander Povetkin v Hasim Rahman WBA heavyweight title bill at the Sporthalle venue in Hamburg Germany on Saturday night.
Thompson, 26, was offered the opportunity to take on Culcay only three weeks ago, when manager Steve Wood phoned him with this unlikely chance, after only having two fights in the last three years.  The Heywood boxer snatched Woods hand off for this chance, despite his lack of recent ring action and sees this has the ideal opportunity to get his stuttering career back on track.

He has teamed up with Manchester coach Anthony Farnell to prepare for this fight and the pair have been working tirelessly in training, having had a lot to cram in just three weeks prep time.  “Ive had three weeks notice, but I’m not going all the way out there to lose, it’s his thirteenth fight and lets see who it’s unlucky for?” Thompson told Jamie Moore for BritishBoxers.co.uk.

Culcay, 26, was a decorated amateur star who won a silver medal in the Euro championship’s in 2008 and a world championship gold the following year. He is now unbeaten as a professional 12 fights, winning 8 by KO and is rated.
But Thompson feels the German is untested and believes that fight number 13 will be unlucky for the champion is preparing to win by knockout.
“I’ve had 25 fights now, done my apprenticeship and I know where Ive gone wrong in the past. “I’m with Arnie now (Anthony Farnell) trainings been going really well even though it has been a rush but we have worked hard I’m in great shape and ready to take Culcay’s title on Saturday.
“He has had twelve fights, but he hasnt been in with anyone who can punch like or as good as me, so we’ll see if he is as good as he is suppose to be.” added a confident Thompson.
Thompson’s only career defeat came in July 2007 when again at short notice he took a title fight against the capable Vincent Vuma for the vacant International WBC light-middleweight title only to be stopped in the eighth-round.

Thomson, though, put up a brave showing that night and floored Vuma with a big left body shot in the 5th. But in the end his inexperience and the fact he hadn’t had long to prepare, were the deciding factors.

Asked if he was worried about Culcay’s knockout record of 8 in 12 fights, Thompson said he wasn’t worried at all! – “No not really! Ive been in with better people than him. Its alright having eight knockouts, but it’s who the eight knockouts are against?


“Has he ever been in with anyone like me? well on Saturday we’ll see how good he is and if he is all that people are making him out to be.”
