Black Country boxing sensations Jason Welborn (left) and Martin Gethin will both fight for British Titles in the New Year.
Welborn (11-1-0) faces Birmingham’s British Welterweight Champion Frankie Gavin whilst Gethin takes on Londoner Ben Murphy for the vacant British Lightweight Title.
Both fights take place on promoter Frank Warren’s first show of 2013 – in association with Midlands promoter Errol Johnson – at Walsall Town Hall on Friday, 18th January. The fights are also live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).
Welborn’s clash with Gavin is the headline fight of the action-packed show and the Rowley Regis fighter can’t wait to go toe-to-toe with Gavin. The fight is a local derby of sorts with the Black Country meeting Birmingham and Welborn is looking forward to proving himself at British title-fight level.
“I can’t wait,” said the 26 year-old. “I need this step up. I’ve got to a certain level now and I’m ready for this. I’ve been in the game a long time and I’ve been around champions so I know what I’ve got to do. It’s my time to shine.

“Frankie’s got a good pedigree, he’s a good boxer; you can’t knock him. You don’t win amateur titles like he has without being decent but nobody’s invincible. I’m not going there to make up the numbers. He’s got what I want.

“The best man will win on the night and I’ll be doing all I can to make sure that’s me.”
Just as intriguing a contest is Walsall’s Martin Gethin (right) versus Ben Murphy for both the British and Commonwealth Titles. Gethin, the current IBF International Lightweight Champion, was due to take on Gavin Rees before the Welshman vacated the title.
Gethin (23-3-1) is now fully-focussed on the Murphy showdown and, fighting in his hometown, is determined to bring the titles back to the Black Country.
“To have the biggest fight of my life in my hometown is a dream come true,” said 29 year-old Gethin. “As a Walsall lad, to be fighting at Walsall Town Hall for a British title, it just doesn’t get any bigger than that.
“It will be a hard fight because he just doesn’t stop coming forward but that’s how I like it.
“A shot at the British title has been a long time coming but it will be worth the wait. It’s going to be a special night.”
Tickets are priced at £30 and £60 and are available from Walsall Town Hall Box Office on 0845 111 2900.
The show will be live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546). Join at www.boxnation.com
