Lewis Taylor
Lewis Taylor (7-0) gets his first taste of title action in Sheffield on March 2nd. The undefeated Derbyshire fighter will take on Lincoln’s Michael Monaghan (18-27) over eight rounds for the International Masters Junior title.
Taylor, who is a qualified accountant turned professional in October 2011 after a successful amateur spell which saw him reach three national finals and also earn the right to fight for his country.
Over the last 16 months Lewis has comprehensively dealt with every fighter he has faced. He fought and beat Iain Jackson and the hugely underrated Ryan Clark in his first two bouts.

Lewis was having to learn quickly; in his third bout he was matched against unbeaten novice Gilson De Jesus who doesn’t like to take a backward step. Lewis kept his composure and walked away with a 39-38 win on points. Since then Lewis has been keeping active which has made him more than happy with the early stages of his career.
“So far everything has gone according to plan. Its flowing just right,“ said Taylor.
“The fights are coming at the right time for me, not too soon but then again I don’t want to much of a gap between fights. My promoter Dennis Hobson is doing a great job of guiding my career.
“I think I am progressing nicely and improving all the time. Moving from the amateurs into the professional side of the sport is a massive change, you can take your time more and it’s all about picking your shots and making them count. This is what we have been fine tuning in the gym.”
Fighting Monaghan is without doubt Lewis’s biggest test, so rest assured he will not be taking the experienced Lincoln man lightly. Monaghan has fought in three area title bouts and two Irish title contests during his career which has seen him battle some of the best boxers from these shores.
“He is a very experienced fighter who has fought the likes of Mathew Macklin and Carl Froch. He has got experience of doing 10 rounds so it’s going to be a great test for me. I will make sure I use my youth and fitness to take over the fight. I won’t stop working all night,” predicted Taylor.
The Masters belt is no Lonsdale belt but it can been seen as a stepping stone to get young boxers bigger fights and more title shots after winning the belt. Lewis sees this a his big chance and was elated when the fight was announced.
“I was buzzing when I got the call for this fight, I can’t wait now. It will be my first eight round contest. I have always been a fit kid so this jump up should be good for me. I think as the fight goes on I will get stronger, my works gets better as the rounds go on so this fight will give me longer to wear Monaghan down.”
It’s good to see that a young fighter who has to deal with the pressures of working during the day as a Purchase Manager alongside being a professional boxer can still enjoy his boxing as much as he was when he first started out. Taylor has just turned 23 and has not lost any enthusiasm towards his chosen sport and is starting to get some local recognition too.
“I’m enjoying my boxing more than ever right now. A lot of people know my name now and I always have people asking me about my career which gives me such a buzz. Especially now I have this title shot it makes me realise that I have something to aim for.”
Taylor is convinced he will beat Monaghan when the two square off at the Don Valley Stadium and is confident he has a bright future ahead of him. So what does he want to achieve in 2013?
“I honestly believe I will get a good win come fight night and I want to keep climbing the ladder during 2013, hopefully ending with an area title fight. I do feel I can reach the top and with Dennis getting me the right fights this really is possible.”
Also featured on this Dennis Hobson Promotions fight card are unbeaten prospects Jamie Sampson and Sam Matkin. Also, exciting heavyweight fighters David Allen and Carl Spencer will take part in their second and third professional outings respectively.
