14th March 2013

The British Lionhearts have named a powerful team to compete against the Mexico Guerreros in the quarter-finals of the World Series Boxing at York Hall in London on Friday 22 March 2013.
All of the British Isles will be represented in a team made-up of boxers from Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland as the Lionhearts look to establish a commanding lead in the home leg of their quarter-final against the Guerreros. The second leg will take place in Mexico a week later.

The Lionhearts line-up includes Wales’ Andrew Selby who has won all five of his contests in his debut season in the competition and is the highest ranked boxer in the whole of the World Series of Boxing.
Selby said: “The World Series of Boxing has been really good for me and I am enjoying the competition.  For a boxer like me, who throws a lot of punches, competing over five rounds instead of three has been great.  The extra rounds mean you have an opportunity to really settle into the bout and show your full range of skills. It does test your fitness, but that has not been a problem and I have lasted the pace well on every occasion.”
“My next opponent will be tough – like all Mexicans.  But if I maintain my good form and continue to box and move then I am hopeful that I can come away with a victory and extend my unbeaten run.”
Selby will be joined by Ireland’s Olympic silver medallist, John Joe Nevin and his countryman, Joe Ward, who is currently ranked third in WSB’s light-heavyweight category.
Making up the Lionhearts team are Joe Joyce from London, who has won four from five and sits third in the heavyweight rankings, and Scotland’s Aston Brown who will be making his first home appearance of the season at middleweight.
They will box a Mexico Guerreros team which finished second in Group A of the World Series of Boxing behind the Azerbaijan Baku Fires.  It includes Fernando Alverez Diaz who is ranked seventh in the WSB’s lightweight division, and Conrad Cummings of Ireland who will box Aston Brown in the middleweight contest.
Brown said: “I’ve watched my opponent on tape a couple of times and I think it should be a good bout.  He likes to come forward and throw punches whereas I like to stay back and box at range so we have contrasting styles which should make it quite a contest.
“My team-mates have told me that the atmosphere in York Hall has been fantastic for all of the recent World Series Boxing matches so I am really looking to boxing there and hope to put on a good show as I have family and friends coming to watch.”
