Underdog Tyler Goodjohn was crowned English Light Welterweight Champion on Saturday night, with a career best performance over Ricky Boylan at London’s O2 arena.
Goodjohn secured the title with a majority decision victory over Boylan with scores of 96-96, and 94-94 twice.
The opening half of the contest was a closely contended affair, with both men having their moments. From there on in, Goodjohn’s boxing skills started to take over as he jabbed and moved his way around the ring, frustrating the Carshalton man, who provided constant pressure but landed very little of any significance.
This was Goodjohn’s second attempt for the title, after previously loosing to Tyrone Nurse in Manchester. Talk immediately after the bout was of a possible return with Boylan, yet Goodjohn could be set to face unbeaten Tommy ‘Gun’ Martin who won an eliminator for the title earlier on in the evening, with a 7th round stopping victory over Matty Tew.
