Former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion Matty Hall has had plenty of setbacks in his career, injury and illness have put paid to many proposed fights and just when things looked to be going smoothly and he was preparing to make a return to the ring on Pat Barrett’s Black Flash Promotions show on October 25th, the Middleton boxer has suffered another setback after injuring his shoulder in training and has been pulled off the bill.

Hall wanted to take some time out of training and still appear on the show, hoping the shoulder would heal in time. But Barrett who also trains Hall made the decision for his fighter and didn’t want to risk him.

The show, the ‘Homecoming, featuring the Next Generation.’ at the Middleton Arena goes ahead as planned with local fighter Matthew Ryan now promoted to the top of the card. Unfortunately another boxer had to pull out of the show recently too, Sean Ben Mulligan suffered a ear injury in sparring. The doctor diagnosed a ripped ear-drum, ruling out a disappointed Mulligan who was set to make his professional debut.

“Matty was upset about having to pull out of the show, it was a big opportunity for him fighting in his home town of Middleton for the first time in his career and it is disappointing for us because it was good for our first promotion to have an established name like Matty on it.” Barrett told www.britishboxers.co.uk

“But I have to think about my boxers long term health and I will not let any of my lads go in there if they are not 100% physically or mentally right, this is a tough game and these kids are putting their trust in me, they are like family so I only have their best interests at heart, there will be other shows and opportunities for them, we have a busy 2015 ahead.

“Young Ben Mulligan has also had to be pulled off the bill after injuring his ear bad in sparring, that was an injury that ruled Ben out immediately, it is a 5-6 week recovery from that one so we had to make the decision to pull him out leaving the lad devastated. This is the second time now his pro debut has fell through and it has been frustrating for Ben but he is strong willed, tough and it will come good for him, these setbacks will make him stronger in the long run.

“But the show goes on, it’s now about the lads who are boxing on the show, it is their night and their opportunity to showcase their talents. Matty Ryan, Zelfa (Barrett, Pats nephew) makes his debut, Heavyweight Young Fury will be on and local lad Curtis Gargano, the son of my former friend the late Des Gargano has been added to the bill so we have some good fights and still plenty to look forward to.

“The show will be shown Live on BBTV on British Boxers website and we are looking forward to delivering the boxers and the fans a successful night. Anyone who would like to come to the show, extra tickets are now available, thank you to all our sponsors and to everyone who has helped with the organising of the show.

Matthew Hall and Ben Mulligan both issued statements about their withdrawal from the bill.

Matthew Hall Statement

“I am just gutted to announce that I wont be fighting on Octoner 25th on the Black Flash Promotion’s show in Middleton. I cannot tell you what it would have meant to me to top Pat’s first show in my home town. It would have been the first time I would ever have fought in Middleton and I had sold loads of tickets. I really want to apologise to everyone who bought tickets and shown me their support and of course Pat for training me and him and his team for putting together a great show.

“I promise I will be back soon, I will be back in training as soon as the shoulder heals and I hope I can be on Pat’s next show. Any of my fans who have bought tickets, please contact me and I will arrange a full refund. If any of you would still like to go and support the show I would be very grateful. Pat is looking to bring regular boxing shows to Middleton and it would be nice if the fans got behind it. I will be back and hope to fight at the Arena in the near future.”

Ben Mulligan Statement

“I am absolutely devastated that I have had to pull out of this fight due to the doctor telling me I have perforated my eardrum and there is no chance I can fight. So sorry to all my fans and people that are paying hard earned money to come and support me. Also to my sponsor, the White Room, who are putting a coach on for fans to get to the venue and return back to the bar after the fight free of charge helping me build an army of loyal fans. Sorry for inconvenience caused again.

“Lastly, it’s not just myself who’s devastated my trainer Pat who’s like a dad to me more than just a trainer who has put this show together to give me and the rest of the lads the opportunity to build are career the right way, putting endless hours into me getting me ready for the fight and an injury has prevented this from happening. I know he’s feeling it as much as me. Just got to make a full recovery and I hope I can make my debut before Christmas and get the ball rolling going into 2015. For people who have bought tickets, if you don’t want to come to the show refunds will be available from myself ASAP. Thanks”
