Doncaster’s Jamie McDonnell successfully retained his WBA bantamweight world title in Monte Carlo on Saturday for the 5th time against Venezuelan former world champion Liborio Solis.

It wasn’t vintage McDonnell, who has been one of British boxing’s top performers over the last few years and he was pushed all the way by Solis, but did enough to earn a points decision after twelve close fought rounds.

There were many who thought Solis did enough to take the win and controversy prevailed, but McDonnell took it with scores of 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113

“We wanted a hard 12 rounds, I felt in control. I’m a little gutted, It is what it is.” Said McDonnell afterwards
