Macklin trains in LA with P4P king Pacquiao |
Darren Barker and Matthew Macklin clash on The Magnificent Seven Frank Warren boxing show for the British and European middleweight titles at the LG Arena on September 18 in what is expected to be a real 50/50 pick em affair that promises to be as good a fight as Nigel Benn vs Chris Eubank’ first fight at the same venue 20 years ago.
Macklin who is now based in Los Angeles with Freddy Roach trainer of P4P king Manny Pacquiao, will be looking to win back his European title as well as adding the British crown, which he also used to hold.
Macklin vacated the European strap because of injury, so didn’t lose it in the ring. Barker, the holder of the two titles now, is adamant he will be hanging onto them come September..
“I am younger and fresher than Matthew. I haven’t been through the wars that he has. I am going in full of confidence.” Barker said.
“I am the champion and I will still have the titles when it is all over.” he added.
Macklin though wants them back as he pushes his claims for a shot at a world title. He readily admits that this is a ‘must-win’ for him.
Macklin said: “This is a fight I am happy to take. I didn’t have to but it suits me in many ways
“I am confident I will win and I want to be part of Frank Warren’s big blockbuster events – especially when they are in Birmingham.
“The fight is still ten weeks away but already my phone has never stopped. The hype is wonderful and it is where I want to be – before moving higher.”
