IBF title chance in the offing for Irishman Brian Magee…
European super-middleweight champion Brian Magee could get a world title shot in the spring of next year after he was linked as a possible opponent for IBF champion Lucian Bute on his Bell Centre bill on the 19th March.
Magee, 35, successfully defended his title for the first time in September against Armenian Roman Aramyan and is widely expected to vacate the title in order to fulfil his dream of fighting for a recognised world title in the coming months.
An announcement on the possible fight, is expected to be made soon, as Canadian Bute will announce his next opponent before the New Year and Magee is thought to be number one choice for the title defence in Montreal.
With the super-six tournament claiming the majority of top opponents for the champion, Bute (left) has been forced to look out of the top ten for opponents since the tournament began, taking on the likes of Jesse Brinkley and Edison Miranda in routine defences.
For Magee, the chance has come at the ideal time, as he turns 36 next year and may not have to much more time left at the top. The southpaw needs a fresh challenge away from the domestic scene, having tasted world level when holding the IBO title between 2002 and 2004.
