James DeGale challenged British super-middleweight champion Paul Smith, in just his ninth professional fight.
The bout was stopped in the ninth round with blood streaming from a wound over Smith’s right eye.
DeGale’s performance was first class and the win was even more impressive, having taken the title off Smith in his Liverpool backyard.
The boxing show was at the Echo Arena in the city and was part of Frank Warren’s ‘Return of the Magnificent Seven’ card.
