Former British champion eyes new weight with new trainer
Former Contender US star Paul “Smigga” Smith is returning to middleweight after joining up with Joe Gallagher at his Manchester Gym in the aftermath of his British super-middleweight title loss to Olympic gold medallist James DeGale.
Smith, 28, suffered only his second career loss against DeGale in December and now moves back down to the 160lb, where he suffered his first defeat to Coventry’s Steve Bendall in 2008 whilst defending the English title.
The scousers new weight division ties up with him and brother Stephen, who holds the Commonwealth featherweight title, re-locating to Gallaghers Gym in Manchester, where the likes of John Murray, Anthony Crolla and Matthew Macklin currently train.
