Cockney cabbie by day Mick ‘The Rub’ Williamson is a surgeon by night, specialising in the quick fix patch ups of battered pugilists.

A cutsman is an essential part of a boxing champion’s entourage. He can be the difference in rescuing a victory and saving a defeat for his man.

Mick Williamson works with many British fighters and was responsible for getting Ricky Hatton through a few close shaves in his career, namely when he won the British title against Jon Thaxton. Hatton suffered a terrible cut early in the fight and it looked a bad one… it was!

Luckily for the Hitman that night ‘The Rub was in his corner and was able to stem the blood and stop the cut from getting any worse.

You have thought Williamson was medically trained. But, like the majority of great cuts men down the ages, he is entirely self-taught. For 20 years Williamson has quietly and efficiently carried out his crucial duties and continues to work with many of the top names in British boxing.

On this fantastic video, Mick tells us his techniques and working as a cuts man.
