All Home Nations secure a winner at the GB Championships 2012

The next generation of prospective Olympic boxers got their chance to shine this weekend as all three home nations had a winner at the GB Amateur Boxing Championships at The Troxy in London.

The
tournament, which was televised on BBC2 and aims to identify the best
young amateur boxers in Great Britain, was entered by 23 current ABA
Champions and featured 9 members of the GB Boxing squad.

The action began at 49kg where Jack Bateson from Leeds weathered a brave effort from Wales’ Ashley Williams to secure a 21-17 win in the light flyweight crown.

The 52kg category saw a Welsh victory as Jay Harris overcame England’s Joe McCulley, 27-21.

The 56kg final pitted two members of GB Boxing’s Development squad against each other. In a close fought contest, Qais Ashfaq from Leeds secured a 20-15 win over Wales’s Commonwealth Games Champion, Sean McGoldrick.

Two victories for Scottish boxers followed as lightweight, Charlie Flynn defeated Zack Davies from Wales and Lewis Benson secured a narrow victory over England’s Robbie Davies at light welterweight.

At welterweight, GB’s Anthony Fowler retained his crown to become a two-time GB Champion with a 28-14 win over Tamuka Muchapondwa.

In the middleweight category, England’s Danny Dignum outscored Keiran Smith of Scotland and at light heavyweight, Newcastle’s Lawrence Osueke secured victory in the GB vest over England’s Kirk Garvey.

Simon Barclay took the heavyweight crown with a 21-14 win over Steven Lavelle from Scotland.

In the bout of the day, GB’s Frazer Clarke and Joseph Joyce
from England delivered a spectacular super heavyweight contest that
brought the crowd to its feet in appreciation of both boxers. The
judges scored it a one point victory for Joyce by 37-36 to cap a superb
