Frank Warren Promotions Ltd. have told Sky TV that they will take legal action if the broadcaster allows British light-heavyweight titlist Tony Bellew to fight on any of their Sports channels before the Liverpool fighter’s contract dispute with FWP has been resolved to their satisfaction.
Bellew was rumoured to be in the running for an undercard slot on Kell Brook’s Matchroom-promoted July 7 meeting with Carson Jones, which takes place at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena and will be shown live on Sky Sports. Alternatively, there were talks of an outing for Bellew sometime this summer on a Sky Sports show, prompting FWP to outline their position to the network.
FWP have issued a warning to Sky explaining that, in their view, Bellew still has a promotional and managerial contract with the outfit and Frank Warren respectively, and cannot box for another promoter, and therefore box on their TV network, until this issue has been resolved.
However, Bellew reiterated his desire to part company with FWP during an exclusive interview with BoxingScene last Thursday; telling me that he considers himself a “free agent” and expects a fair hearing from whoever hears his case.
Frank Warren also issued a statement on Friday explaining that he plans to sue the BBBoC due to the Board’s stance over David Haye meeting with Dereck Chisora’s on July 14. Warren argued that the BBBoC’s threat to take action against any licence-holders who take in the Luxembourg Boxing Federation licensed promotion impacts on boxers such as Kevin Mitchell, who would be a natural choice for the undercard of the Upton Park bill as he supports West Ham United FC.
Certainly, FWP show no sign of giving ground on their position over the controversial meeting between Haye and Chisora. Nor are they prepared to let Bellew and James DeGale, who has also expressed a desire to move, go without a fight.
