12th March 2013

The WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns was unveiled today as Matchroom Boxing’s latest big-name signing and as lined him up to fight on a ‘massive’ show in Scotland on May 11.

Burns joins Eddie Hearn’s promotional revolution after Leaving Frank Warren Promotions sighting that he had become frustrated at the cancellation of fights and the delay of his unification fight with IBF title-holder Miguel Vazquez.
An original 16 March date was put back to 20 April after Vazquez revealed he was suffering from a stomach infection and presented Warren with a doctor’s certificate to confirm that his withdrawal was legitimate, this proved that the postponement was out of Warren’s hands.
Warren has had a bit of a transitional week for his stable also seeing unbeaten super-middleweight George Groves leave for the rival Matchroom camp last week.
Hearn is delighted to have the Scottish world champion on board and has big plans for his future and says his first fight under their banner will be a world title defence against an as-yet unnamed opponent in his native land on 11 May.
Hearn said: “I’m delighted to welcome Ricky Burns to the team. Ricky is an outstanding fighter and a hugely popular sporting figure in Scotland.
“We are looking forward to a massive show on May 11 in Scotland as we begin our journey with Ricky.”
