After getting hurt in the seventh round and looking on the verge of getting stopped, Burns (36-2, 11KO) recouped fought back and traded with Gonzales and made it to the end of the session. Burns bit down and then came back stronger and more determined to tough it out and see what his challenger had down the straight, as they entered the championship rounds. It was now time to take his challenger into uncharted territory, Gonzalez had never gone beyond ten rounds and Burns was beginning to look stronger after getting a massive 7th round wake-up call.
“I was saying to Billy in the corner that I couldn’t believe how awkward he was.” said Burns
“Billy was saying I was lunging in, but I think that was because I was trying to go out and go to town a bit.
“I knew that the rounds were close, they’ve said that the judges had me behind. But I felt the round before he pulled out he was getting tired and that’s when I started upping the work rate.”
Burns has had many good nights and shown us great skills to get to where he is and remain on top of the world. Saturday night wasn’t one of his better boxing nights, but he shown us other attributes that make him an hard champion to dethrone and future opponents will now that it will take a tough man with a plan to shift him. Burns shown his fighting heart and grit in this fight that will no doubt help him in the future fights against the other worlds best, like Adrien Broner the WBC champion or IBF title holder Miguel Vazquez.
