Middleton’s Liam Taylor will take out his frustration on his opponent at the Blackpool Winter Gardens on Friday June 7, after failing to enter next month’s welterweight Prizefighter tournament.

The six-bout, unbeaten fighter was hoping to star in the Sky televised event at Bethnal Green’s York Hall and, after recently losing his job, feels sure he would have walked off with the £32,000 prize.

“It seems to be all prospects in it, so my promoter [Steve Wood] put my name forward but we haven’t heard anything back.  I’d have won it definitely and couldn’t see myself getting beat off the people in it.  I’ve just been made redundant too so the prize money would’ve been great!

“If there’s a lightweight or light-welter one that comes up in the future then I’d definitely want to go in it,” said the former junior and senior ABA finalist, “and if anyone drops out of this one then I’d go in straight away because obviously I’m fighting on Friday and I’ll still be fit.”

Liam will get his first taste of six-round action in Blackpool, on the undercard of Mark Evans’ Welsh super-featherweight title clash with Chuck Jones.  Part of a huge 12-bout bill, ‘Dynamo’ is slated to face experienced Donny Dontchev but, after previous opponent changes, says whoever is in the opposite corner will be adding a loss to their ledger.

“I’m just ready to fight whoever I get in the ring with,” stated Taylor, who is yet to lose a round as a pro.  “I know I’m going to step up sooner rather than later so I’m ready for whoever Steve [Wood] chucks at me.  He’s tried to get me three decent opponents for this fight and they’ve all pulled out, but every training camp I’m working really hard and I feel fitter than ever.  Whatever opponent Steve gets me I know I’ll beat them.”

With aspirations to be a future belt-holder, Liam gets plenty of inspiration from the VIP Promotions stable.  Currently the home of British flyweight champion Kevin Satchell, and English champions James ‘Jazza’ Dickens (super-bantam), Josh Warrington (featherweight), Gary Sykes (super-feather), and Shayne Singleton (light-welter) – Liam is sure he will be joining the VIP champions roster soon as he steadily works his way to the top.

“I’m only 22, so I’m still learning and don’t want to get chucked in at the deep end yet.  I know I’d do decent against the top British lads at the minute but there’s no rush and I’m building my way up slowly.  Obviously it’s down to Steve and my trainer but in 12 months we’ll be looking at titles, whether it’s Central Area, British Masters or English.  Next year is definitely going to be a big year for me.

“For now I’m just looking forward to Blackpool.  There are 13 fights on and it’s a really good place to fight because the Winter Gardens is a different venue to the usual sports centres.  It’s only 40 minutes from Manchester too so it’s good for everyone to come down to, and there’s another couple of lads on from Middleton so it will be great.”
