Unbeaten Flanagan KO’s Grant to take his record to 21-0

Unbeaten lightweight contender Terry ‘Turbo’ Flanagan scored a surprise second round knockout over Michael Grant who had never previously been stopped, Flanagan went looking for Grant from the first bell and on the front foot he stalked him. Flanagan looked content to just walk through Grant, who was on the back foot looking to counter the Mancunian and in a close opener he landed a couple.

The second round started the same with Flanagan walking into range and letting the shots go. Flanagan,  in great shape has was his opponent Grant, continued to let the shots go, but the canny boxer Grant looked comfortable allowing Flanagan to come forward and the counter style was looking like his tactics. Then midway through the session Flanagan looked like he got clipped by a shot, his gloves touched the floor and the referee began to give him a count to the boxers protests, Flanagan claiming he had slipped.

The sudden shock that this was only a six round fight and that this would be a two point round seemed to inspire Flanagan and he responded by going back after Grant to even the round up. The fight got a little messy and they were tying up a bit when they got close but Flanagan was trying to get his hooks off inside.

Grants hands were low, he was open, Flanagan’s in and out footwork is very impressive and he can glide in and out of range with ease while landing a quick combination in the process. But now he was starting to plant his feet more. He then drew Grant in and unleashed  a perfectly timed chopping left backhand, that spun his head around, the spray flying off Grant’s head who fell and landed face first on the canvas. He some how bravely got to his feet and tried to steady himself so the referee would let him carry on but he was gone and the fight was waved off at 1:57 of the round.

Flanagan will now chase the British title fight he wants so much, Martin Gethin is the current champion and the Manchester lightweight hopes he will get his chance before the end of the year. read more on Flanagan’s plans here.
