Martin Gethin is hoping to add the Vacant WBA Intercontinental Lightweight Championship to his list of titles when he takes on Derry Mathews in May.
The duo are set to go head-to-head in Mathews’ hometown of Liverpool on Saturday, 10th May. The showdown is promoted by Frank Warren and will be televised live and exclusive on The Channel Of Champions BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).
British Champion Gethin, will take on popular Scouser, Mathews, at the Liverpool Olympia. Gethin’s British Lightweight Title, will not be on the line. The Walsall boxer’s knows that he must beat Mathews to get back on track for a shot at a world title after losing to Panamanian, Ammeth Diaz, in an IBF World Title Eliminator last May.
A perforated eardrum forced him to retire on that occasion but now, fully recovered, the ‘Quiet Man’ is looking forward to stepping into Mathews’ backyard to fight for another title, subject to WBA approval, .
“This is a big fight for me,” explained Gethin. “I came within touching last time against Diaz who is world class.
“It wasn’t my night then, I got a perforated eardrum and it threw my game plan out of the window but I stuck in there with him. I belong in world class and Mathews is standing in my way. It’s two of the best lightweights in the country meeting at a crossroads with the winner going on to bigger and better things.
“We’re both fighting men, neither of us will back down, it’s going to come down to who wants it the most on the night and who’s prepared to put it all on the line to get it. That man will be me.
“I want to show the whole of the UK that the Quiet Man does his talking in the ring. The lightweight division is full of talented fighters but I sometimes think people forget that I’m the British Champion and am certainly in the mix! What better way to remind them than picking up another title – the WBA Intercontinental Championship – in front of a packed arena, in Derry’s backyard, live on BoxNation?”
The Frank Warren promoted show also sees middleweight star, Billy Joe Saunders, fight for the Vacant European Middleweight Championship against, Emanuele Blandamura, in the joint main event on the show.
Super-middleweight, Chris Eubank Jnr., features alongside Liverpool favourites undefeated light welterweight, Thomas Stalker, top light-welterweight prospect,Nathan Brough, and Ellesmere Port’s up-and-coming unbeaten talent, Matty Fagan.
New Frank Warren signings Jack Catterall and Tommy Langford make their debut for their new promoter on the show whilst Welsh super-featherweight, Craig Evans, aims to take his record to 12-0. Belfast featherweight, Ciaran McVarnock, completes the packed show.
