Undefeated British and Commonwealth Super – Featherweight king Liam Walsh has stated his desire to face off against the winner of tonight’s WBO lightweight title showdown between Terry Flanagan and Derry Mathews in the near future.
Walsh, who also holds a WBO European title at Lightweight, is very confident of his fistic chances against either champion or challenger.
“I know can beat the two men who are fighting tonight but I’ve got to show respect to them. I hope they have a really good fight, it’s a massive British world title fight and I wish them both the best. Personally I think Terry will win and probably look good doing it.”
The Norfolk banger had formerly been scheduled to face Ricky Burns for the WBO strap in 2012. Unfortunately, the southpaw stylist had to withdraw through injury and would surely love to exorcise any demons born from such a disappointment with a second championship date following tonight.
Flanagan and Mathews weighed in at 135 and 134 pounds respectively at yesterday’s weigh in, which ran devoid of incident, with both fighters perhaps looking to state their intent in the ring rather than perform theatrically out of it.
