Conor Benn, 147 1/4lbs, did what was expected of him by disposing of Steven Backhouse, 143 1/2lbs, in the first of their four round contest. Enjoying advantages in weight and hand speed, the still raw Benn tried to be patient but once the opportunity to cut loose presented itself the 20 year old couldn’t contain himself. Backhouse went down from a left hook just seconds after the opening bell and never recovered. The fight was stopped at 1.06 of the first.

Benn recorded his fourth stoppage victory in six fights. Backhouse drops to 1-5-1 and suffers his second successive stoppage loss.

Salford’s Lee Gillespie (7-1, 1KO) halted Backhouse in the second round in October. Gillespie should be the type of fighter ‘Team Benn’ target in the early part of 2017.
