According to various recent reports, Liverpool’s Callum Smith has become the leading candidate to challenge the pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez in September.

Following the withdrawal of Billy Joe Saunders from the negotiations, The Atheltic reported that Smith has been offered £4million to take the fight and has emerged as the frontrunner for the megafight.

In a recent interview with BBTV, his Coach Joe Gallagher emphasised his belief that with Saunders dropping out of the mix, the super-middleweight world champion has to be the frontrunner.

“It was between Billy Joe and Callum Smith – Billy Joe got the fight and we were pleased for him, a great payday and I genuinely think he would have given him problems”, he said.

But, now he has ruled himself out Sky, Eddie Hearn and Dazn need to put pressure on Canelo and say that ‘we didn’t have the big fight in May, there’s a big event in September – there always is, so let’s make it Callum Smith vs Canelo’.

“It’ll be the first fight since Canelo vs Mayweather that Ring Champion has fought a Ring Champion.

“Callum Smith isn’t asking for stupid money, we know there isn’t the Kovalev or the Jacobs money, he is willing to fight for less than what Billy Joe was because he wants the opportunity and I think the rumours of Canelo vs David Lemieux, how can they entertain that?

“Dazn need to put pressure on Canelo here and tell him he needs to earn his money, Callum Smith is the kid and I don’t think there’s room for anyone else unless he fought a Benavidez, a Caleb Plant or a GGG, but it doesn’t look like that will happen.

“We will see what happens, but it would be a shame if it doesn’t happen. It is a big fight for September and it is one that Dazn could use to launch over here.”
