Birmingham’s Dylan Cheema enjoyed a potentially career-changing night in Coventry as he emerged victor in BOXXER’s lightweight tournament on Saturday night. Cheema narrowly outpointed Norwich’s Rylan Charlton in the final over three rounds to secure a £40,000 pay check and the opportunity to fight on the huge Sky Sports platform, and will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Mikael Lawal who won the cruiserweight tournament back in 2019, now fighting regularly on BOXXER shows across the country.
Cheema began the night with a first-round stoppage of Otis Lookham in the quarter-finals before edging out Scott Melvin by split-decision in the semis. Charlton meanwhile unanimously beat Joe Hughes in the quarters before stopping Shaun Cooper in the third and final round in the semis. The final proved a remarkable watch, both throwing the kitchen sink as they looked to have their arm raised upon the sounding of the final bell. It was the Midlander however who emerged victorious and will hope to continue this momentum and assert himself on the domestic scene at 135lbs in the near future.
Charlton proved yet again his toughness and determination, refusing to give in all night, and like all eight competitors who fought in Coventry, will no doubt come again.
