Eddie Hearn has confirmed that Deontay Wilder‘s manager Shelly Finkel has replied to a proposal for a potential showdown with Anthony Joshua next year.

Hearn told the DAZN Boxing Show he sent Finkel an email back in August about making a long-awaited fight between the two heavyweights for 2023.

Finkel initially didn’t respond, presumably awaiting the resolution of Wilder’s comeback fight versus Robert Helenius in October which ended with a first-round knockout victory for the American.

Wilder is now in the hunt for a big fight once again and a showdown with Joshua remains one of the most intriguing fights in the sport.

The two teams were locked in talks between 2017 and 2019 for what would have been one of the biggest fights in boxing history, crowning the first undisputed heavyweight champion in two decades in the process.

Wilder suffered back-to-back defeats to Fury in 2020 and 2021.

Talks eventually broke down however and Joshua subsequently lost his titles to Andy Ruiz Jnr before regaining them six months later, only to lose twice to pound-for-pound star Oleksandr Usyk in his most recent outings.

Wilder meanwhile has also tasted defeat twice in recent years, both coming to Britain’s Tyson Fury in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
