Caroline Dubois has been upgraded to full WBC lightweight champion after Katie Taylor opted to vacate the belt.

The 23-year-old won the interim WBC title with a unanimous decision victory over Maira Maneo earlier this year and was subsequently installed as Taylor’s mandatory challenger.

Dubois, who is 10-0 (5KOs) as a professional, will make the first defence of her title against Canada’s Jessica Camara in Sheffield on January 11th.

Dubois presented with belt at WBC convention

Dubois entered the professional ranks in February 2022 after competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

She has won all 10 of her subsequent bouts since, five of which came inside the distance, and dropped Uruguay’s Moneo en route to a comfortable unanimous decision win in August.

Alongside the lesser IBO title, the win saw Dubois become number one challenger for the WBC lightweight crown, and Taylor’s subsequent decision to vacate meant she was presented with the belt at the WBC’s annual convention in Hamburg on Tuesday.

She told Sky Sports: “It is a great honour to be elevated to full WBC world champion and to have WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman present me with the belt.

“It’s always been my dream to become world champion, and this is just the start of the journey for me. I look forward to defending my WBC world title on January 11 in Sheffield.”

Taylor opts to stay at super-lightweight

Irish hero Taylor once held all four major sanctioning body titles at lightweight but has not fought at 135lbs since a unanimous decision victory over Karen Carabajal in October 2022.

Instead, Taylor’s last three bouts have been a weight division above at super-lightweight, where she now reigns as undisputed champion.

She initially challenged previous belt-holder Chantelle Cameron at Dublin’s 3Arena in May last year but was handed the first professional defeat of her career by majority-decision.

Nevertheless, Taylor regrouped and exacted revenge on her English counterpart to become undisputed champion in a second separate weight division.

She most recently defended her titles in a stellar ten-round rematch with fellow pound-for-pound star Amanda Serrano, who she outpointed via split-decision in Arlington, Texas last month.
