Big John McDermott sensationally stopped Larry Olubamiwo in the first round of their southern area heavyweight title fight at the York Hall Bethnall Green.
Olubamiwo was being tipped has a future prospect in the division but the ‘War Machine’ it seems lacks the fundamentals and needs to go back to the drawing board.
McDermott had not had a win in four fights, but the big man is a seasoned pro and his ring smart was more than what Olubamiwo was used to and it shown immediately.
Olubamiwo almost steamed McDermott from the bell almost as if looking for the big finish himself. But this proved to be his downfall and he played straight into the hands of the experienced former English champion and British title challenger.
A left hook wobbled Olubamiwo and McDermott never let him off the hook, before a right hand crashed off the chin of his chin sending him over.
The referee gave him a chance to fight on, when he could easily have stopped it, but he had nothing to offer and was put down again and after an eight count the fight was called off.
“I knew he was going to come and was training for him,” McDermott said. “I threw a right and saw him wobble and kept on him. It was fantastic. I am on the way back now. Any fight that comes up I will take.”
