|WBA and IBF Light-Welterweight Champion of the World
Britain’s Amir Khan put on a master class performance to retain his WBA light-welterweight title by dazzling Zab Judah for four rounds before stopping him with a right uppercut to the belly at 2:47 of the fifth round.
Khan came out of the traps flying and peppered Judah with jabs, three, four and five punch combinations, that the IBF champion just couldn’t handle. Judah was overwhelmed by Khans speed and movement as time finally caught up with the former five time world champion.
Khan added Judah’s IBF belt to his WBA strap to unify the belts and on this showing the boy from Bolton has become a man. The Hugh potential that he possesses, was realised again at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The way he toyed and outwitted a fighter of the calibre of Judah, rubber stamps his claim as one of the best fighters in the world.
Judah (41-7, 28 KOs) later argued that the shot from Khan was low, but with replays showing that the shot was in fact on the top of his shorts high waist band and no-where near the south boarder. Khan’s perfectly executed game plan, had the 33-year-old veteran looking for a way out and even this once proud champion must acknowledge the showing Khan put on in his second Las Vegas appearance.
Khan (26-1, 18 KOs) is in the big league of boxing superstars now and with the backing of Golden Boy Promotions will push to try and unify the belts with a fight against WBC and WBO champion Timothy Bradley. But the ultimate aim of Khan, is to fight the very best in the world and his future plans are to move up to welterweight and face pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jnr.
Khan will now take a well deserved break after a long training camp with trainer Freddie Roach in LA and will spend the Muslim Holy month, Ramadan in Saudi Arabia on a pilgrimage to Mecca. Before getting back in the gym to prepare for his next fight, which is proposed for December.
