With terrestrial TV almost turning there back on professional boxing over the last few years, it was encouraging to read today that ITV have agreed a deal with Amir Khan to screen his fight with American Paulie Malignaggi on 15th May.
The WBA light-welterweight champion’s last five fights have been shown on Sky Sports Box Office. But he has snubbed a take-it-or-leave it pay-per-view offer from Sky in favour of a return to terrestrial television.
Khan, 22, has never been a knockout success in terms of pay-perview sales and his camp have decided to link up with ITV in the hope that more people will tune in.
His departure from Sky Sports is amicable, although according to the People Sport future opponents will have to be marquee names to tempt Sky to link back up.
Khan faces Malignaggi, who lost to Ricky Hatton in 2008, at Madison Square Garden on May 15. It is his first fight since splitting from promoter Frank Warren and joining Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy.
