Carl Froch lost his WBC world title against Dane Mikkel Kessler in Denmark, in what was the second stage of Showtime’s Super Six World Boxing tournament.

A unanimous decision saw Kessler gain two points in the tournament.
The judges scorecards which were 117-111, 116-112, and 115-113, all in favor of Kessler, didn’t tell the tail of the fight, it was much closer than that, although the Dane was a worthy winner and improved his record to 43-2 (32 KOs) with the win while Froch suffered his first loss and fell to 26-1 (20 KOs).

Both boxers suffered cuts in the fight. Froch was cut over his nose in the 8th while Kessler sustained a gash over his left eye in the 10th. The final two rounds saw each man lay it all on the line to produce a thrilling conclusion to this memorable battle and contender for ‘fight of the year’

Afterwards a disappointed Froch gave credit to Kessler, but added if the fight had been in the UK, things would have been different and the verdict would have gone the other way.

Froch is down but not out
“I feel terrible that I lost my title, absolutely gutted,” Froch said. “I took some big punches off a big puncher and I’ve got to give Kessler the credit he deserves. He stayed in there and is a strong, proud warrior.

“I don’t want to make a mockery of anything but I feel if it was at home in my town, the decision would have gone the other way.”

Froch could still possibly meet Kessler sooner rather than later in a rematch and the chance to regain the world title, knowing two wins are likely to set up another meeting with Kessler in the Super Six tournament. Victory over his next opponent Arthur Abraham would move Froch into the semi-finals, and he is determined to put things right.

“I’m still in the tournament and will still get the chance to win the belt back. I’ve got to beat Arthur Abraham in my next fight to get to the semi-finals of the tournament. I’ll be back. I’ll definitely be back.”

New WBC champion Kessler who had lost his WBA belt in his Super Six opener to Andre Ward, will next face another American fighter in Allen Green.

Kessler says’s he overcame the pressure with a specially devised game plan to outwit and beat, the strong Froch.

“It was a spectacular fight, Carl came to fight me and was a very, very physically strong fighter,” he said.

“We had a great game plan for the fight. I knew he is a hard hitter. There was pressure on me to regain my title and I’m so proud that I have.”
