Gavin Rees out-pointed Andrew Murray to win the vacant European lightweight title Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff on Saturday night, setting himself on course for another world title charge.
The former WBA light-welterweight champion had started the fight well and built up an early lead against the unbeaten Irishman. But felt the pace later in the fight and had to dig deep and did to take the fight 115-112, 115-112 and 116-112 on the judges scorecards.
The 31-year-old from Newbridge, was able to outbox Murray and although significantly smaller than Murray, it was his speed that was giving his opponent troubles he found hard to work out.
Murray, wasn’t able to sustain any attacks of note and was thinking about his work too much, while the swift Rees was able to get in and out and land two and three punches to Murray’s single shots.
But as the fight wore on Rees began to blow and was content to try and tie Murray up to gain breath. But in the eight round the referee docked the Welshman a point for holding. With Rees struggling to find his second wind, Murray was not able to capitalise on his opponents weakness and Rees’ experience saw him in the end see out a comfortable victory.
