Leicester boxer Rendall Munroe’s full training regime for his forthcoming interim WBA super bantamweight title fight is now underway, with the southpaw fighter eager to ensure that he is at his very best to take on up-and-coming prospect Scott Quigg in Manchester on 16th June.
The 31-year-old is feeling good ahead of the title bout and enjoying experimenting with a new approach as part of his preparations. Ahead of next month’s fight Rendall has been practising the increasingly popular Bikram Yoga in his home city, as he explained.

“I had done a few yoga classes in the past and I didn’t think it worked for me, so I was sceptical at first,” admits Munroe,
who joins Leicester Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill and Leicestershire batsman Will Jefferson as sportsmen that use Bikram Yoga.

“However, with it being something new, I thought that I would give it a try. Trust me, after the first go, I thought that I didn’t want to come back“ it was hard work. But, as everyone knows, I like a challenge so I decided to do it right up until some of my previous fights.

“I have felt some big benefits from it, Rendall continues.

“A lot of people see me jogging miles away from home, but I had been suffering some Achilles tendon problems. Since I have been doing Bikram Yoga in Leicester, I haven’t really been suffering with it.

“Now, Hardip Singh and Jason Shinfield (conditioning coach and trainer respectively) have ensured that Bikram Yoga is an established part of my training programme and I do it every Friday.

“After hitting the road all week and punching the bags, it gives the body something of a different work out and it brings your muscles back to reality. It stretches muscles out and prevents injuries, which is obviously a good thing, as reduced treatment time ensures that I have more time training.”

Libby Nockles, owner of Bikram Yoga College of India in Leicester, is delighted that another of Leicester’s professional sportsmen is utilising Bikram Yoga.

“Rendall works really hard in every class that he has taken part in,” she said.

“In terms of the yoga, with every class he attends, he is always improving“ and it has been really beneficial for other members of our classes to have Rendall practising with us. Hopefully Bikram Yoga will go on to help to play a part in him winning his next fight.”

About Bikram Yoga
Bikram Yoga consists of a set 26 yoga postures, which are practised in a room heated to 105° with humidity set at 40%.

The objective of Bikram Yoga and its poses is to maximise the flow of fresh oxygen to all parts of the body, whilst flushing out toxins contained within the body.

Practised by the likes of David Beckham and Lady Gaga, Bikram Yoga has also aided recovery from injury, with the heat of the room allowing for muscles to be stretched longer and easier.
